The team behind Patchwork backed Mastodon and the Fediverse back in late 2022, when all sorts of Twitter alternatives were popping up. Fast forward to 2024 and the creation of Patchwork was inspired by the spam wave which hit the Fediverse at the start of the year. Luckily we were spam free: our unique sign up challenge stopped spammers from taking over our server, and our filters enabled us to filter out the spam which was flowing everywhere.
We realised that the technology within our large, complex fork of Mastodon contained some small, simple patches which could be really helpful to server admins.
Server admins are the unsung heroines and heroes of the Fediverse, working quietly for long hours to keep everyone’s posts federating and timelines flowing.
